In flamenco, like in all art forms, historians, specialists and critics have progressively defined a period of reference which they call the Golden Age. The Golden Age of flamenco corresponds to the period that goes from the last third of the 19th century to the first third of the 20th. This Golden Age mainly refers to singing and dancing, since guitar playing would take much longer to develop its real worth.
From this point of view, no present day singer or dancer, with a few exceptions, could equal in quality, purity and creativity those who took flamenco to its maximum splendour in that Golden Age. Since then, there has been a decline of the formal canons of flamenco art as established in that golden era. Impoverishment, simplification, blending and fusion, as well as loss of content, of meaning and of the spirit that enlivened this art form.
Israel Galván celebrates the 20th anniversary of this show, a classic of his repertoire that fuses tradition and renewal.
Israel Galván was born into a family of flamenco dancers in Seville 1973), and was trained in classical flamenco. At present he is one of the most innovative dancers and choreographers in the world. Inspired by a wide range of topics, he reconstructs the language of flamenco and challenges its norms. He is involved in many collaborations with a great variety of artists and in very different projects. .
He is the winner of the 2005 National Dance Award for category Creation, the 2012 and 2021 Bessie Award for an Outstanding Production in New York, the 2012 Golden Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts, and the 2016 and 2023 National Dance Award for Exceptional Artistry in the United Kingdom. In 2016 he was awarded the title of Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters of the Republic of France by the country’s Ministry of Culture.
