Toledo, set at the beginning of the 17th century, which is also the context of La ilustre fregona, one of Miguel de Cervantes’ ‘Exemplary Novels’. On meeting Raquel, daughter of the swordsmith, Juan Luis, a court painter, realizes that he has found the model he needs to represent the Holy Virgin. Count Don Diego is also attracted by the young lady, but since she does not reciprocate, he holds her prisoner at the Inn of the Sevillano. ‘The Guest’ at the Inn is none other than Cervantes, who appears in the plot and recites phrases taken literally from his novel.
Together with the ingenuous original plot typical of the Spanish Golden Age (love affairs, kidnapping, revenge, picaresque elements…), this zarzuela is full of musical moments that quickly became popular as independent pieces, such as in the case of the very famous ballad ‘Canto a la espada toledana’, popularly known as ‘Fiel espada triunfadora’.
