The fifth of Puccini’s twelve operas and one of his masterpieces marks an important transition in the evolution of the composer’s music.
His previous opera, La bohème, is the last portrait of the working classes’ misfortunes and broken dreams, whereas Tosca will be the return to the purest tragedy. Tosca was either acclaimed or rejected by critics. In contrast with the exquisiteness of the arias ‘Recondita armonia’, ‘Vissi d´arte’ and ‘E lucevan le stelle’, there is an excess of unnecessary brutality, jealousy, torture, lust, treason, extortion, execution on stage, a suicide; on the other hand,  the opera has a marked impressionist style, evident Wagnerian influence, particularly in the orchestration, an ideal structure, characters perfectly well built and extraordinarily well described by the music…For all these reasons and because the public is the one that determines the final verdict, Tosca’s success following the second performance was and is incombustible.
As Carlos Pujol wrote in his book 1900, Puccini “had converted a violent melodrama into a torrent of impassioned and tender melodies capable of moving his most recalcitrant enemies”.
The opera’s plot is of a political nature and the action takes place in a period of just twenty-four hours following Napoleon’s victory at the Battle of Marengo.
