The trilogy by Mozart and Da Ponte –Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte– is one of the cornerstones of the history of opera, and Le nozze... is the first of the masterpieces created by this fortunate collaboration.
Although seemingly simple and banal, Le nozze di Figaro is one of the most complete exhibitions of the human condition ever performed on stage, with which Mozart went far beyond the conventions of the buffa genre. Inspired by the play La folle journée ou le mariage de Figaro, written by Pierre-Augustin Caron de BeauMarchais in 1784 and which contravened the social mores of pre-revolutionary Paris by suggesting that serfs were clever and cunning enough to outwit their masters, Mozart's librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte removed its political content without detracting from its humour or essence.
Le nozze di Figaro is considered one of the finest creations in the history of opera. Mozart portrays his characters by means of a kaleidoscopic game and his music to reflect their multiple states of mind: passion, eroticism, abandon, nostalgia or regret. Amusement and a bittersweet reflection on human beings converge in Mozart’s first timeless masterpiece in the field of opera buffa in Italian.
Le nozze di Figaro is one of the most beloved and most regularly performed titles of the repertoire.
