Pat Metheny (Lee's Summit, Missouri, 1954), with his balance between experimentation and concessions to the mass public, is perhaps the guitarist who has best represented the various nooks and crannies of jazz-rock fusion. Since the time he participated in vibraphonist Gary Burton's quintet (between 1974 and 1977) he displayed a style of his own that blended the loose, flexible articulation common to wind instrument players with an advanced rhythmic and harmonic sensibility: a way of playing and improvising that was modern in conception but grounded deeply in the jazz tradition of melody, swing and blues. With his first album as a leader, Bright Size Life (1975, with Jaco Pastorius and Bob Moses), he reinvented the traditional ‘jazz guitar’ sound, skilfully combining pop-rock elements with an astute jazz style and avoiding the clichés of both genres.
Over time, this music winner of 20 Grammy Awards has continued to redefine the genre by using new technologies and enhancing the improvisational and sonic character of his instrument. His versatility is almost unparalleled: he has performed with artists as diverse as Steve Reich, Herbie Hancock, Jim Hall, Milton Nascimento and David Bowie, and has composed works for solo guitar, small ensembles, electric and acoustic instruments, large orchestras and ballet pieces, and even for the robotic instruments of his Orchestrion project.
At the peak of his career he recorded with Ornette Coleman a project of great atonal density, and backed the then young saxophonist Joshua Tedman in Wish (1993), two other signs of notable eclecticism.
In Malaga Pat Metheny will offer an intimate concert in which he will play more than a dozen guitars, performing previous compositions as well as pieces from his most recent albums Dream box (2023) and MoonDial (2024).
