‘Jolifanto’ is the first word of Karawane, a seminal phonetic Dadaist poem by Hugo Ball. When it was recited for the time in 1916 at the Cabaret Voltaire, both the author and the audience fell into a trance that left Ball exhausted, having to be carried off stage as the audience claimed the spotlight.
More than a century later and thanks to a succession of coincidences, Jolifanto is also the title of an album starring two powerful musical entities. Artists from very different backgrounds converge with a shared desire to experiment, as well as curiosity and passion for rhythmic exploration in their music.
Together, ZA! and Perrate are a single organism that travels from the roots of flamenco to electronic rave with nothing seemingly out of place, since the place is yet to be discovered. And Jolifanto, an unexpected Dadaist explosion, difficult to define, propelled by polyrhythm expanding into apparently distant territories (jazz, post-rock, avant garde) under the influence of flamenco. A sort of para-flamenco post-dadaism.
ZA! is a Catalan rock and electronic duo, psychedelic, industrial, experimental and avant-garde, a benchmark of the European underground, that has been working with a self-management ethic for 20 years, in the course of which it has released eight albums.
Perrate, born in the 60s and formerly known as ‘Tomás de Perrate’, is a flamenco singer of ancient lineage, a rocker in his adolescence and ladies' hairdresser for three decades who began his late artistic career in the 21st century, with a curious, very daring spirit and four albums released to date.
