For many years there has been a close relationship between Malaga and the Nordic countries, given that the Costa del Sol, with its beaches, is now the home or holiday destination for many persons from that region of Europe.
The extraordinary concert is a tribute to two very important dates in the month of December for the Nordic culture: the ceremony of the Nobel Prizes in Sweden and Norway, on one hand, and on the other the festivity of the 6th of December to celebrate the day on which Finland declared its independence from the Russian Empire, an event which is particularly relevant at present in the context of the war in Ukraine.
In consequence, the programme presented by the OFM (Malaga Philharmonic Orchestra) for this concert comprises pieces that are very representative of the Northern European repertoire. The Festive Music for Large Orchestra by the Swedish composer Hugo Alfvén, whose 150th anniversary is being celebrated this year, is the piece played every year at the beginning of the Nobel Prize ceremony. It will be followed by Edvar Grieg’s Concerto for piano in A minor, one of the great Norwegian composer’s most popular works, which will be performed together with the well-known Swedish pianist Helfe Antoni. The second part of the concert will consist of Pastoral Suite, a real treasure by the Swedish composer Lars-Erik Larsson, and Karelia Suite and Finlandia, two other very emblematic pieces by Jean Sibelius, the most representative composer of  Finnish nationalism.
A festival for the senses which aims to unite the city of Malaga with the music and citizens of the Nordic countries.
