A large part of Mahler’s music is driven by the melody and, on occasions, was so strongly associated to the songs and messages they transmit that many of them were appropriated by the composer and included in his symphonies. Friedrich Rückert (1788-1866), editor and professor of oriental languages, wrote poetry imitating Asian and Middle Eastern poetic styles, in addition to beautiful examples of romantic lyrical poems, like the ones that Mahler gathered for this set of songs. When reading the texts of the Ruckert Lieder, one easily  understands why they were so attractive for the composer’s romantic feelings. The songs were premiered on the 29th of January 1905 in Vienna by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra with Mahler conducting and the German baritone Friedrich Weidemann as soloist.
The Requiem for the Living by the American composer Daniel Ernest Forrest was premiered on the 24th of March 2013 by the Hickory Choral Society on occasion of its 35th anniversary. Its  five movements form a narrative not only devoted to imploring eternal peace for the dead, but also for the living and their struggle with the vicissitudes of  human existence.
