Program notes Jose Antonio Canton

In his ballet Pulcinella, K034, Stravinksy expressed his ingenuous sense of rhythm with a baroque orchestration filtered by the neoclassicism of the first third of the 20th century, adapting to the guidelines of the libretto and Léonide Massine’s choreography, who conceived his protagonist based on a dramatic character of commedia dell’arte. Commissioned by Serguéi Diáguilev, the production included the participation of Pablo Ruiz Picasso, who designed the costumes and the sets. The ballet premiered on the 15th of May, 1920, in Paris, with Ernest Ansermet as conductor. The story is about the jealousy that Pulcinella provokes in his admirers’ boyfriends, who try to kill him. However, Pulcinella tricks them and succeeds in redirecting the situation, which ends happily for everyone.
Presented in its final version by Serguéi Diáguilev’s company Les Ballets Russes at the Alhambra Theatre in London on the 22nd of July, 1919, with choreography by Léonide Massine, sets by Pablo Picasso and conducted by Ernest Ansermet, the ballet The Thee-Cornered Hat by Manuel de Falla produced a great impact due to its popular Spanish origins stylized in neoclassical form. This was particularly attractive for the audience, and became one of the references of the composer’s production on achieving renown as part of the classical ballet repertoire of the 20th century. With a libretto by Gregorio Martínez Sierra and his wife María de la O Lejárraga, it is based on an adaptation of the novel El corregidor y la molinera by the Spanish writer from Guadix Pedro Antonio de Alarcón.
