Program notes José Antonio Cantón

The music of Carl Maria von Weber has unmistakable modern accents. The importance of Der freischütz (The freeshooter) is based on a new paradigm in which plot and music share the same aesthetic attributes on an unprecedented level. Its overture is a foretaste of the best programme music that was to prevail in Europe from the mid-19th century onwards.
Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.3, which started taking shape during the last year of the 18th century, was finished in 1802 and premiered the following year at the Theater an der Wien with the composer as soloist. Dedicated to Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia, it is admirable for its inspiration, its technical and formal perfection, its harmonic and instrumental balance, and for the varied romantic character of its content.
Max Reger, who lived between the 19th and 20th centuries, must be regarded as a staunch defender of the German musical tradition going back to Juan Sebastian Bach, from whom he acquired a decisive moral attitude and aesthetic imprint. His Variations on a Theme by Mozart in G major, Op.132, probably his best-known work, are dedicated to the memory of the Meiningen Court Orchestra.
