This is the story of a socially impossible relationship between a working-class woman and middle-class man; but it is also the testimony of the political crisis of 1868 that led to the fall of the Bourbon dynasty and the proclamation of the First Republic in 1873. A confusing and convulsive period of time in which many echoes of the present resound. A preparation and proclamation synchronised with the main character’s vicissitudes, who hears the multitudes in the streets shouting “Long live the Federal Republic!” as she gives birth to her bastard son.
An audacious, dramatic proposal that combines, with seven actresses on stage, the tone of an individual and collective drama with others that are fresher and lighter, comical at times, so characteristic of the narrative of Emilia Pardo Bazán.
“Of all of Emilia Pardo Bazan’s extensive literary production, we have chosen La tribuna because it is set in the tobacco factory of A Coruña (Marineda in the novel). This was one of the first industries to massively employ a female workforce, constituting one of the first areas of collective socialisation for women, who thus transcended the domestic environment in which they had been traditionally confined.” Cándido Pazo
