In Paris, on the 1st of June 1310, Marguerite Porete, a beguine from the region of Hainaut, was condemned to the stake by the Inquisition. Her crime was to have written The Mirror of Simple Souls, a book that challenged the doctrines of her time and which, despite censorship, was widely disseminated in the centuries that followed.
La Herejía de las Beguinas intertwines fact and fiction to explore this dark episode of medieval history. Set in 14th century France, the play portrays the final moments of Marguerite Porete, who on the eve of her execution, desperately searches for her book, symbol of her spiritual and intellectual legacy. At her side is Aleydis, her faithful confidant and assistant, who faces a profound internal struggle: to follow her mentor's path or to give in to fear and conformity.
Inspired by Plato's myth of the cave, the play invites us to reflect on the struggle for freedom and equality throughout history. An allegory of feminism, the play explores how women have challenged oppressive structures and fought for their rights.
Since its foundation, La Misma Tara has emphasised stage experimentation ranging from video-creation to contemporary theatre with the aim of making visible invisible stories that deserve to be told, and highlighting issues of social and cultural relevance. Directed by Juan Fleta, its multidisciplinary approach combines authorship, performance and direction. Over the years, it has participated in events such as Malaga de Festival (MaF), Factoría de Cine, Festival Emerge and the 41st Malaga Theatre Festival.
