CANDIDATE FOR THE 27TH MAX AWARD FOR BEST MUSICAL OR LYRICAL SHOW

Hand programme (ESP)

Chamber opera with music by David del Puerto (2005 National Music Award and libretto by Martín Llade (Ondas Award for Sinfonía de la mañana, on Radio Clásica)

“In an arid Spain (…) ignorance, intolerance and misery are exploited by persons who struggle for a bite to eat and at the same time try to maintain intact their false honour.
In this context, being born in a river, the son of a thief and the mistress of a Black man, is not a good beginning. Lazarillo, the boy, wanders between run down villages that were once dreams of progress (…) serving masters and lords, learning from them tough lessons on how to survive. But what year is it? 1550 or 2050? Watching Lazarillo is like looking at the past and the future at the same time; caressing the past with relief for having overcome it and turning pale at the  warnings of the future that awaits us.”  Ricardo Campelo
The staging for this Lazarillo makes use of audiovisual technology. A camera captures the singers’ actions on stage and projects them onto a giant screen. In addition, the images are manipulated with interferences, asynchronism, snow effects, pixilation and delay to amplify the theatrical experience.
Teatro Xtremo is a group based in Madrid that mixes visual arts, dance, video and theatre to create intense and multi-faceted performance experiences, having received important awards for its work. Its risky and innovative creations explore the limits of performance art and contemporary feelings such as alienation and love. At present the group is in charge of directing the Chamber Opera Festival of the Community of Madrid and the Chamber Opera Festival of Tenerife.
