Every day a group of men wander through the streets of a coastal city in the north of Spain looking for emergency exits for their lives. Long term fear, tightrope walkers at the end of the month, and at the beginning as well, without a net, an audience, applause, they walk daily on the tightrope of precarious jobs, supporting their existence with scaffolds of hope and turning their few happy moments of conversation and routines into trenches, as if the failure which they try to avoid every day was not theirs, as they talk and laugh at their stories about everything and nothing, hopeful and calm one sunny Monday morning.
Los lunes al sol is the theatrical adaptation of one of this century’s most brilliant Spanish films. It shows in a realistic and moving manner the daily struggles, frustration and despair one can face searching for work in a competitive job market that is constantly changing; how the lack of opportunities and social pressure affect personal relationships, self-esteem and the hope for a better future; how economic circumstances can shape identity and human relations. Its sincere narrative gives rise to questions regarding social justice and the contemporary labor system, and to a reflection on inequalities in our society.
