Always attracted to the philosophy of the great German man of letters Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Dukas used as inspiration Goethe’s poetic ballad Der Zauberlehrling (The sorcerer’s spprentice), in which the latter describes himself as the apprentice of a master sorcerer who in the absence of the latter encourages a magic broom to help him with the house chores he has been given. The musical piece is introduced slowly, creating a mysterious and troubling atmosphere in which the main theme appears in the woodwind instruments.
Poulenc composed the Concerto for two pianos and orchestra in D minor in 1932. It was premiered that year on the 5th of September during the Fifth International Music Festival of Venice, with Poulenc and Jacques Fevrier as the soloists and Désiré Defauw conducting the La Scala Orchestra.
The three pieces that collectively form Claude Debussy’s Images pour orchestre, each one with different instrumentation, comprise some of his most accessible pieces due to their great expressivity. Dedicated to his lover and partner Ema Bardac, the complete score was premiered by the Cologne Concert Orchestra on the 26th of January, 1913 at the Chatelet Theatre in Paris, with Debussy as conductor.
