In Spain, which has been invaded by the French in the early 19th century, people gather in front of the statues of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, begging for their help. The popular outcry tries to revive the spirit of the nobleman knight in his constant defence of love, freedom and justice. The image of Dulcinea in the middle of the crowd, evoking the ideal of love, moves Don Quixote, who responds to the call of citizens, accompanied by his squire.
The Cuban National Ballet ranks high amongst major international institutions of its kind, and in contemporary Latin American culture, due to the artistic and technical precision of its dancers and the broad and diverse aesthetic approach of choreographers. Its artistic style is based on respect for the romantic and classical tradition, at the same time stimulating the creative work of choreographers who explore contemporary expression. In 2018 it was declared Cultural Heritage of the Cuban Nation.
Founded in 1948 by prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso, the current prima ballerina and director of the company is the Cuban dancer Viengsay Valdés.
